Suggestion to make NWC look as used as it is...

I've noticed for a while now that open sign-up and application games show up in the listing of recently scheduled games and upcoming games on the main page, but invite only games do not.

It takes a few extra steps for users to see these invite only games and as a result, the site looks less active than it really is.

DMs running these invite only games are also missing out on potential opportunities to have prospective players see the game, develop an interest and initiate contact asking for an invite.

Players are missing out because they may not realize there are games that are active. This especially hurts when someone new comes here for the first time.

Posts in the forums are great, but nothing says "I'm really interested in your game" as a PM from a prospective player to a DM.

Wondering if there's any way the site could be modified to show the invite only games on the main page.

Any ideas?

Well, games listed on the front page are those looking for players. Invite only games generally have a full slate, thus counterproductive to list them as well in that manner.

I usually start new campaigns as application and then after I've got a full compliment, switch the status to invite only. Sometimes players drop, in which case I post the opening in the forums.

People can always call up the calender and see what games are running in any given month.

That being said, I wouldn't really have a problem with making a calender listing of all games in the coming week to better show site activity. Would just need to color the invite only games red to show they are closed campaigns. Perhaps this could be implemented as part of the site overhaul some are in the process of working on.

Would be cool if invite only sessions had a option to make it public default set to private.

The event calendar should definitely be on the home page. Optimally a website should make it as easy as possible for first time visitors to find exactly what they want quickly and easily and I think the game calendar would help many of them do that.

So... does anyone know if this has a chance in my marriage of happening?

(i.e. a chance in hell)

Any suggestions for changes to the site will need to be forwarded to the site owners using the link on the main page. They do not visit the site nor read the forums regularly. Major changes are not likely at this point.

Actually, there are some working on an site upgrade. People have come and gone on this and there's an ongoing discussion to kick start this again.

I've sent emails over the past few years through that link. They vanish into the ether.

Including one which wanted to know if there was any way to donate money towards site expenses via money order or other non-on-line option!

I still think it'd be a good idea... the front page would look a lot more vibrant for certain, especially to new people who come here and see... no games for consideration.

Yes. For the time being consider the site static. But... there IS a remote possibility that there may be a rebuild in the site's future. Stay tuned, and of course, if anyone has skills and time to offer it can't hurt to let us know.

I was thinking that in many ways, the thing that looks worst is the news at the head of the front page. We're now well into 2010, and news dated autum of the previous year makes the site look either dead or extremely underused. Even if the news posted was relatively mundane (unless there was an upcoming NWCon announcement or similar in the space) would it perhaps be an idea to put up more regular, if mundane, posts? I have no idea what exactly could be put in there, but it might be something to help overcome the possibility of a "dead site" first impression.

Someone had access to that column last year. Was it Olias Stormcrow?

In any event you're right. It should be replaced with something generic if it can't be kept up to date.

Damn shame really. It would be easy to monitor the vault and forums and add a new news item every week or so.

That's what I was thinking. Even a weekly news post advertising any and all new campaigns/multi-shots whatever. Would also help show people stuff was going on.

EDIT: Not sure, but was it Dane Bramage who had news access?

Yes, Dane has access to the news but he's since retired. It may be time to contact him to see if it'd be possible to use his account or if another could be added for news. I don't think Lazybones has that access unfortunately.

Nothing to do with me, Urk.

The only folks I knew could change the front page were Rizzen, Gilaun or Dane, who was listed at one time as a NWC newshound.

Dane has been retired from the site for some time and I believe Gilaun changed the front page last year for the NWCon.

Sorry, Olias. Von Stalhein is right. It was Dane Brammage that was doing the news updates, but seeing as the last post is NWCon5 he must have only done it for a few months.

I think a total site redesign would be great. It'd be good to have more automation and methods of keeping content up to date.

I'll do the front end Flex stuff if somebody does the server side junk... lol =)

I would say this site could do with a good cleaning. I honestly do not use it much for some of the reasons that were outlined above.

I think our webmaster would gladly help if I asked him as he likes building websites a great deal. I am hesitant to post a link to ours as do not want to be seen as tring to advertise when really just offering to help.

I notice several features do not work for me as well on this site and always wondered why that is so. Like marking topics read gives me an error and always has.

The problem is the original site designer - Rizzen - doesn't update the site anymore. The physical server itself is kindly looked after by Gilaun, a friend of Rizzen's (as I understand it).

Thus, major updates to the site are somewhat difficult. Rizzen was working on a complete rebuild, but at some stage the project sadly dropped off the edge of the world.

Quite a while ago, there was at least one project that aimed to develop a 'new' NWC-alike that would be community-run, but that project dried up too. Since the majority of users on this site (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, people!) primarily use it for running weekly custom-build campaigns, the lack of affiliation to any particular group/PW/organisation and the still-excellent scheduling features keep people around; that and the established community.

But we can dream, eh?
