Technical Data
Game Version: 1.68.8099
Game Language: English
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Pentium Dual Core
Processor Speed: 3.00 GHz
Operating System / Service Pack: Professional Windows XP with Service Pack 2
System Ram: 2.00 GB RAM
Video Card manufacturer: ATI Radeon
Video Card Model: Radeon X800GTO
Video Card RAM: 256 MB
Video Card Driver Version: 8.191.0.0

Problem Description

I’ve being running a campaign for some time now, but had troubles lately. I host the game as DM with seven players, no problems until last session, when two of the players were not able to remain in the server, when they crash and try to return they don’t even see the game listed on Game Spy. The game runs fine for the rest of the players and me. I’d being running the game for months in one computer the dedicated server and in another computer the DMC. Players can log to the dedicated server including me, except two of them. By the way, both are playing dwarves, so we had some jokes about it.

Have you updated HAKs for the module recently?

Have you changed the start area?

Does the server (or clients) have anything in the overrride folder?

Do they get an error when connecting to the server? (If they do then probably a different set of questions that needs to be answered.)

Or do they crash when they enter the first area?

did the error fix itself once the server was rebooted.

it is possible it's an ISP issue. remember when you couldn't see my server yet everyone else could.

dunno... just saying.

Thank you all for your quick answer. To respond to what you ask Virthe.

No, there is no update of haks.

Same start area
Same override folder during the last months

If they get an error when connecting? That’s odd, they don’t get an error message. They log in, but can’t move. They say first that they feel a high lag spike, then they crash.

They crash when they enter the first area.

What is stranger is that the rest of the players, five for that session, were able to log in, while just two were not.

To answer you DB. It is something like what happened to me in your game DB, I was able to see the game first but not to log in, then I used lose the game from the Game Spy list. However, there is a small difference here, they are able to log in on first attempt, one of them even did it twice, but they can’t move and suddenly boom, they crash and can’t log in anymore. I didn’t do a server reboot, forgot that you did that in our situation DB, though I did have a test session later with just them and they had the same trouble; during that test session I rebooted the server, even loaded a different module, the DMFI starter module.

maybe...their connection changed or they both live at the same area and there was a bad weather which caused to troubles in the connections/internet at that area...

you can't be sure the problem is with your server after all.

hate to say it manne, but like with you, my guess is that it's on their end. only thing that makes sense. no one else has problems.

did they update video drivers recently? i know that can play havoc. new routers?

grasping at straws, but i'm confident it's on their end and not yours.

good luck.

If others are able to connect to your server, Mannedoc, then the problem most likely lies with those few that can't. It could be a video driver issue, like Dane suggested, or a virus/malware that's infected the system. Did either of them recently change their systems to a dual-core one? I know NWN doesn't like dual-core systems without using a patch released by Bioware not to long ago.

I don’t know if they both live in the same area, but as Dane said, the problem i had was on my side, so probably here as well, it is on their side. I will run a test tonight and let you all know how went.

Thank you GW, DB and TB.

Yes, this sounds like a client side problem...

If you use HAKs they may now be using a later version, perhaps they downloaded it for playing something else. If you use the overrride then the clients may have changed the override, and perhaps added files there for other games which causes a conflict.

Crashes like this often occurs due to having different custom content on different machines.

One way of checking this is to list the dates and file sizes in bytes of the files/HAKs/overrides you are using and asking the other clients to double check the content.
