Dedicated NWN Server for a large PW

Greetings, All.

I'm here to ask you of an advice. Which reasonable server confo would be best for NWN? As I know, NWN is single-threaded application, then modern Dual-Core CPU may be of no use?

We have now P4 3.0 whith 1024 MB RAM. And there are PW with 30-50 players online... when we did allowed it, online grew up sometimes to 60 and more with extreme lags.

Now choosing among Intel E6xxx and Opteron 15x...
Best of all, I'd like to hear people who have experience of running their own NWN Shards, this is not a theory what I'm respectfully looking for.

More detail needed on your OLD system first. What OS? What version? (if applicable).

What other applications are running con-currently?

What kind of connection to the internet?

do you monitor CPU/MEMORY usage?

Finally, what module are you running? Is the code REALLY tight?

Be well. Game on.

P.S. I'm running a PW which needs some serious load testing (care to help me load it with PLAYERS sometime?) but so far, with up to ten users, NO LAG issues. The PW is HUGE too, over 300 areas, and 100megs in size. She runs smooth as a baby's bottom so far as our present load has allowed us to test.

Thanks for reply

OS is Linux, and only con-current apps are sshd and alike system apps.
Connection is 100MBit up/down cable connection, shared with CS and LA2 etc. servers at our ISP.

Memory load is at most 700-800MB, with average 400-500, so no problem with it. And CPU load is about 60-80% average.

Module has little more then 500 areas now, but custom scripted systems amount is high. This is more then 3 years old continously running and growing shard.

With up to 30 players online, though, no lags occur. Except of when 20 of them may gather to fight each other during some quest or so.

And what system you currenly running on? With what CPU usage av.?

Dual-core would probably be of little value. Reason, as it is single threaded and the dula cores individually are slower than single cores you would end up with your NWN thread running on a 2.2 ghz core. The other core would most likely handle operating system overhead which is not a lot unless you have 50 people sshing into the server.
Load should ideally be no higher than 50% average to handle spikes if you want peak performance, and of course the lower it is the better. I would advise the best single core you can afford.

That's that I already know. But wich one? Pity, 99% modern CPUs is dual- or quad-core. Best Exception could be Athlon FX-62, but price is still unreasonable. Opteron 154/156 priced equal to Core 2 Duo E6750/E6850. But I'm not sure, if single core of E6750 is slower then Opterton 145. For that reason I ask. What do You use, All?

linux box, 32 players or less.

Most PCs at least as of a few years ago, were not meant to handle 55+ players, even though the capacity to do so exists to slot it for that many.

Trim your code, reduce numbers of heartbeats, and NPC walking around, if you are gonna have that many players.

It's not just a question of hardware.

We surely will use both ways, so code optimization solely, will not do. We do not wanna reduce out world so, we will optimize and expand it. And what was I asked of was optimal hardware, not an obvious things like optimization role.

PW w/ 430+ areas...

currently running on a CentOS Linux 4.4 with 1 gig RAM (used typically less than 1/3 ... cpu loads of 1.3 to 1.5) on a P4 2.8 - she runs sweet.

come see for yourself
