Sensing Annie had awakened, Imillar turned his head to regard her, his one eye gleaming in the darkness. “You were having a nightmare. Don’t worry, Annie. I wasn’t watching you; I heard you stir. I’ll leave the watching to Roland. I am often awake at night. The meditation techniques I learned from Pai Mei allow me to sleep very little, which can be a good thing for someone plagued by nightmares.” From his tone, it’s impossible to tell if he’s referring to himself in this last statement or if he’s making an offer to share his techniques.

Annie blinked a few times in surprise. Finally, she asked, "Meditation?" her voice sounding hoarse. Swallowing, she managed a more normal voice and continued, "Is that somehow related to the "chi" you mentioned earlier?" As always, her eyes never quite looked at Imillar's face when she spoke to him. They stared past his ear, or at his shoulder, or at his hands. The tight muscles around her eyes relaxed a little, though.

Imillar actually begins to look animated. Compared to his usual grim demeanor, he looks almost excited. "The chi is the lifeforce possessed by all living things. Everyone has a chi, in some it is stronger than others. With the proper training and devotion, one can learn to harness their chi. My master Pai Mei taught me how to tap into my chi through meditation. By focusing and feeling the chi, I am capable of feats beyond my normal elven abilities. It is through my chi that I learned to fight, despite my...visual difficulties. It is also through meditation that I am able to use my chi to simulate the effects of sleep in a fraction of the time. Those examples are only a minute sample of what is possible. During my time at the monastary I saw Pai Mei do things that were beyond explanation."
