Description:
Garrek is a quiet man. His voice is low and calm at all times. His eyes are a dark brown giving an illusion of black to the casual observer. He has a slow easy grin and seems to be well groomed at all times. He often sits alone drawing while he watches the people around him. He is usually clothed in all black making his eyes seem much darker then what they are in reality.
His hair is long and raven black and usually covered by a cowl that he looks out from. The hair usually falls over his face to further hide his features. His face is almost always shadowed by the cowl. Holding his black cloak at the collar is a pendent of a frog cast in silver. He is a smoker and a drinker; but, he does neither to an extreme.
On his back, he carries two short swords in an “X” shape. On each boot, he stows a dagger for quick drawing or throwing. Lower on his back he carries a medium sized pack for his necessities and around his waist is a belt with several pockets on it. Lastly, he carries a leather pouch, dyed black, with a leather strap crossing one shoulder. In this he carries his various items he uses frequently.
Background:
Garrek was born to his father’s first wife. His mother died when Garrek was 9. Garrek’s father remarried to a sorceress when Garrek was 11. This marriage brought another addition to the family, a stepbrother named Andev.
The stepmother tried to raise both boys to be sorcerers. As Garrek did not have blood magic his only option was that as a wizard. Try and try again, Garrek cannot master the arcane which created scorn from his stepmother. The stepmother shows obvious favoritism to her own blood son who gained arcane powers everyday.
Garrek’s father, too blinded by love to see what was happening accepted his wife’s words on how to best “train” Garrek to learn the arcane. He was locked in the cellar for long hours while he was to pray for guidance and knowledge to become a wizard. Instead of prayer, Garrek found other ways to pass the hours. He would use dirt to “sketch” the shadows on the wall, sketch his shadow in various acts. Over time, Garrek would speak to his shadow out of sheer loneliness. While the shadow never answered back or showed any signs of animation, Garrek slowly started to believe that he could communicate with the shadow.
Finally, while studying with his brother, Garrek finds a tome in his stepmother’s effects that dealt with the shadows and Shar. He became determined to learn more about the shadows while ignoring the deity in the process. As he spends more and more time studying the shadows he thinks he is able to hear them whisper. While out of the cellar, the shadows seemed to bend, trying to reach to him.
His stepmother sees these shadows moving over his feet one day while he studies Mystra’s dogma and casts him from the house as a heretic at the age of 19. He begins his life as a rogue, stealing gold and items to live off of. His obsession with the shadows becomes more and more consuming; but, he still resists the pull of Shar. He overhears in a tavern of shadow adepts living somewhere north of his childhood home. He leaves his hometown to seek out these people to learn more about the shadows and to learn to master them for his own means.
