Elith keeps a cool head

Breathing heavily Elith looks down at the two corpses lying motionless at his feet, cut to ribbons by the blades of his companions and burned by the power of his magic missiles. “How did this happen?” Elith wonders, “It was not supposed to be like this.” Elith kneels next to the bodies and whispers “sleep children until the day of gods return.” He turns and looks up at his new companions, “We have committed a terrible crime my friends and I am so sorry to have led us into this mess.” He stands and starts to pace back and forth; he looks at the mess in the house, the bodies, the jimmied lock on the door and the note. “I am open to suggestions as to what we do next.” Elith continues to pace and says, “The bodies must receive a proper burial but I am not so convinced that dragging them outside is the best course of action right now. I am not very well informed to the ways of men but I would guess that if we go to the authorities, tell them exactly what has happened here today the Mayor will deny any involvement, and declare that we murdered them in cold blood and created the note get away with the murder.” Elith whispers, “May god have mercy on my soul for what I am about to suggest.” Elith points to the body of the little rogue that jumped out of the shadows and attacked them. “We must make it look like this rogue broke into the house and was discovered while trying to rob it and they were both killed in the fight that followed.” Looking down at the note, “We will have to play along with the Mayors game for now if we ever hope to bring him to justice, unless of course somebody else has a better idea.”

Elith makes a copy of the note but writes it in elfish so few will know what it says if it happens to fall into the wrong hands. “We may have need of this information sometime in the future.”

Owain looks at Elith and says, "You might want to share that note with the rest of us." Without waiting for a reply, Owain looked down at the blood still oozing from the back of the rogue and shakes his head. Bloody tracks lead from the corpse to where the brothers were standing. "You wouldn't fool my old granny with that story. We can pop this one into a sack and take it over to the barn with the rats. After we kill the rats, we can dig a hole and bury the lot, with this one underneath. You and the priest can say a few words to your God. While you're at it, pray that no-one saw us come in here. Unless you want to try burn down the house in this rain."

Owain paused to think for a bit about the story, then continued, "It might be best if we just called the guard and claimed self defence. It's a lot easier to explain the almost truth than it is to come up with a complicated story that has no truth in it at all. Let's see if we can find any evidence to link these two to the brigands outside the walls." "

What's in that note about the mayor anyway," he asked Elith?

"THEY attacked us!" Myridin almost yells. He looks down at Elith and Owain with an almost vicios glare. "Leo was just talking to her and she drew steel on him. Then that little backstabber shows up." He walks over to the bodies and moves them close together. He then takes both of their weapons and sticks in the other, rips out some hair from the rogue and puts it in Merin’s hand. He looks around a little then takes off Merin's choker and puts it in the rogues hand. "There! now it looks like his story is true. We can tell the gaurds that we heard someone cry for help as we where heading to the barn to kill the rats. But when we got in, this is what we found." He crosses his arms across his chest looking quite pleased with himself. Then he looks down at Leo :What do you think?"

The Mayor's Dirty Secret

RB,

It seems our plan has went quite well. The prostitute is willing to say whatever we want her to, and he isn't about to take that chance. With his product off the market, we'll be able to charge any price we wish. A pleasure doing business with you.

Olaf

Owain grates his teeth at the Myridin's little rant and then opens his mouth to reply with a sharp retort. Thinking better of it, he snaps his mouth shut and turns to Elith. Taking the note he scans it quickly then hands it over to Myridin, wondering if the great lug is even able to read it.

Turning back to Elith he says, "So, the mayor has really set us up for this. I expect he was hoping that these two would attack us and we would get rid of them for him. Well, we should probably try and find this prostitue and learn what we can. I don't suppose it's an ale monopoly he's after, that seems kind of petty even for this small a place."

With that, he bends over the two corpses and reluctantly sticks Merin's shiny blade into the back of the rogue. "Pity we can't keep this, it's quite a good blade, in fact it looks a lot like one Ned brought with him from Fairloch. I wonder if these two have any connection to the thieves guild there?"

Myridin reads

the note. "OH crap". He starts breathing heavy, gritting his teeth, and squeezing the hilt of his sword. "that little creep set us up? Thats just great! I think its time to get barbaric on his scrawny arse!" He stands there shaking his head with a look of anger spreading across his face. "Nobody uses the Barca brothers like that!"

Nodding at Owains thoughts that the thieves guild may be involved Elith says,” Easy my friend, we will bring the Mayor to justice in due time. Right now, I think he has the upper hand, which forces us to play along with his game. If we kill the mayor now we will surely be put to death, I am sorry but that is simply unacceptable. I am not afraid of dieing but to die like that will not due at all.”

Elith nods at the fine work Owain is doing setting up the crime scene and smiles. “You’re really good at that Owain, have you done this type of work before?” He starts searching the bodies and the house looking for any clues that might connect them to Ned.

Myridin looks at Leo worried about his silence. This encounter must be weighing heavily on Leo's mind he thinks. This could be bad.
He looks over to Owain " You're the sneaky one. take a look outside make sure nobody's coming. We still may be able to sneak out of here." Still breathing heavily, "but before we leave this area that mayor will PAY!"

Leonidas narrows his eyes

and hardens his jaw.
He whispers a brief prayer over the bodies and, folding his index finger over each middle finger, brings his hands together over the bodies.
"You are all correct. Myridin, we will have our revenge. Elith, I see your point. The mayor WILL pay for this life with his. All in due time, my brother," looking at Myridin.
"The almighty will deliver their souls. I regret that she misconstrued my words. She did indeed attack us. Nonetheless, we have sinned and for this God will expect our penance. I will pray this evening and find a suitable penance. I hope you will all join me. Those, like this mayor, who dare transgress against the word of God must pay with their lives. Justice. Lions of Justice, indeed. To serve justice we must at times follow the word of the law and..the church. At other times, we must take means which may be initially difficult to justify but nevertheless are in line with God's plan. If these two had not payed the ultimate sacrifice, who knows how many more would have suffered and even died at the hands of this despotic mayor?"
Leonidas reached over his left shoulder and squeezed the long hilt and pommel of his sword. He had used his mace against the two victims. Clearly he was not as skilled with the blugeoning weapon. Could he bring himself to use the Barca weapon? Was it the right thing to do? He remembered back to his training with the bastard sword. Hours on end swinging, holding the weapon upright while praying, practicing with the wooden copy twice the weight of his sword. At times, his father would say, drop the shield from your left hand and grasp the sword with two hands. This will increase its power. But NEVER do this in formation with your fellows, for then the man to your left is no longer protected. Now Leonidas felt like he had dropped his shield and grasped his sword with both hands. He threatened the halfling, going for the big hit, but he dropped his shield by opening himself and his new compatriots to the wrath of the town. He thought about this metaphor and chuckled aloud, without explaining himself to the others. He and Myridin had just arrived in this town, but already they were poised for infamy.
He felt that God a special purpose for him and his brother and Leonidas was determined to see it through. He felt that meeting the other two was not a coincidence. He would play this game with the mayor until the right time. Then, God's grace will show the way to the mayor's blood.

the end justifies the means

Giving Leonidas a strange look Elith asks, “Brother? Why did you call me brother? Is this a human custom to call comrades brothers?” Smiling, “I must admit that I do like it ‘brother’.” He giggles at himself and asks, “What is that you’re doing with your fingers over there bodies? What does that mean? I am not aware of any death ceremonies specified in the holy text.” He seems to reconsider this line of questioning and says, “I will join you in prayer tonight ‘brother’ though I will not be searching for penance only clarity and understanding of gods will. Your words ring true though I have never considered it before,” He has a small coughing fit, “the ends justifies the means.” He nods his head as he considers this new philosophy. “Yes brother I will indeed be joining you in prayer tonight.”

Elith goes back to searching the room for information but it is obvious that his mind is somewhere else

Myridin looks

down at the elf. "What makes you think he was calling you brother? Where you raised in his house?" He steps up to Elith "He was talking to me elf. And if your holy texts dont say the same as his, then obviously yours are wrong." He flexes his arm and chest muscles then crosses his arms across his chest.

Leonidas gives a rather firm, but reassuring
Return To Top

grip on Myridin's shoulder.
He looks to the elf.
"I was speaking to my brother, Elith."
He forces a smile
"Indeed. Myridin IS my twin brother. We grew up together. Brotherhood is yet another matter. Men..and elves, i presume can share brotherhood, regardless of their family derivation."
He makes the holy sign again.
"This, little elf, is the sign of our almighty. It is an acknowledgment of him and his penetrance over all. By folding the fingers as such, I represent men on the right hand and women on the left. By bringing the hands together I show that God brings us all together; and under him we shall thrive."
"I am pleased that you will pray with me this very night and ask for God's guidance. The Scolex is my guide, but I am aware of some wisdom in that old tome of yours, as well"

Elith looks like he might cry.

Elith looks up at Leonidus and Myridin then turns an odd purple color. He looks thoroughly embarrassed and upset. “I am sorry” he squeaks out, “I misunderstood.” Elith goes back to what he was doing but certainly deflated, as if somebody had just taken away Elith’s membership to his favorite club.

Owain collapses

into a mild fit in the corner, falling to the floor he narrowly misses impaling himself on his own sword. After coughing and shaking for a brief time, he rises and looking at Leonidas he says, "Brothers, we must remember that the true God is more concerned with what is inside than what is without. My mother, God rest her soul, taught me to cross my fingers so." Owain crosses his thumbs over the little finger of each hand.

He turns to Elith and continues, "My mother said to bring the two hands together in front and then sweep them up and out, like the rising of the sun. Brother Elith, do you have any such rituals of faith?" He tries desperately to stiffle a broad grin.

"Brother Myridin, perhaps you and I might visit the ladies of pleasure while our brother Lions are praying. Perhaps we may be able to find the mayor's special friend and loosen her tongue, as a sister might speak to a brother."

Owain makes Elith's day

Elith turns from searching the house seeming to be happier now that Owain has called him “brother” and pays very close attention to the ritual he is performing. “Like this?” he asks Owain, mimicking the hand motions perfectly. Once he finishes Elith stops and seems to be waiting for something, with a slight frown, he does it again, and then he mimics Leonida’s ritual perfectly, stops, and again waits for something. Looking to both of them he asks, “Am I doing something wrong, nothings happening.”

Before either of them can answer Elith moves on, with a smile, to Owains question, “Of course we have rituals but they are always for a specific purpose and usually have a specific effect, assuming of course you did everything correctly. For example, by performing this ritual and uttering these words god has shown me how to do this.” He moves his fingers in a very quick and incredibly complicated fashion and whispers some impossible to understand words causing a glowing green jelly-like blob forms in the palm of his hand which he makes a throwing like gesture but the blob moves on its own and strikes the opposite wall. The blob splatters on the wall and burns everything it touches like acid. He walks over to where the blob struck, looks closely at how it splattered and burnt the wall “Interesting” he mutters while pulling out his book of god, and makes some notes. The note only takes a second for him to write and when Elith finishes he turns and looks at his “brothers.”

Leonidas frowns

and for the first time looks almost angry.
He stares down the wiry rogue.
"Your tone of voice mocks the almighty. Moreover, it would seem your sarcasm was misconstrued as warmth by our elven friend. Words are powerful tools, Mr. Rhys. Prayers are even more powerful. I have little doubt that God will reveal his might to you."
Leonidas carries on with his business.

Owain stiffles a retort

and returns to the shadows. He slips a thin blade into his left sleeve and another into his right boot. He begins practising a quick move, flipping his left hand so that the blade appears almost magically in the palm of his hand. His eyes bore into Leonidas as he does so, all the while whistling a tune known as "The Archbishop's Goat". The song is a mockery of the now nameless Archbishop and the church that he lead to infamy.

Myridin watches

Owain very closely. Not at all likeing what appears to be an evil intent towards his brother. He steps between Owain and Leo looking at Owain, to make sure Owain knew he was watching. He steps closer and whispers to him"Come close to my brother with that look in your eye and it will be the last look you give anybody".
Satisfied that he made his point he turned to Elith."You realize that display o yours will make it harder to explain the two dead here. We need to leave quickly before its to late."
He looks back to Owain"Did you check to make sure the area is clear yet? We've wasted enough time here". He looks over to his brother "Leo if you want to bury these two wr will need some sacks or dark colored bedsheets. White and the blood will be seen from a good distance off. And we must hury."
